Boating Officer Safety Network
More information
Cross Jurisdictional Data Access

NSW Maritime Boating Safety Officers (BSOs) need access to Victorian and Queensland customer data to conduct compliance checks on interstate boat license holders operating vessels on NSW waterways to serve informal warnings and raise infringement notices. In the past, Boating Safety Officers had to create records manually and contact Safe Transport Victoria and Maritime Safety Queensland after returning from the field to confirm details before taking any formal actions against interstate customers breaching NSW Maritime regulations and/or legislation.

Improving suicide prevention response and planning
More information
Using place-based analysis and integrated insights

The NSW Suicide Monitoring System was developed to support better reporting on suicides in NSW – and enable communities, local organisations and government agencies to assess and respond to suicide more quickly and effectively. Prior to the establishment of the Suicide Monitoring System, NSW relied on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Causes of Death data for information about the number of suicides in NSW. The ABS data has a delay of approximately 12 to 18 months between the death occurring and reporting being available to NSW.

Data Capability Framework
More information
Ensuring appropriate capability to make effective use of data

TfNSW has several significant goals and outcomes that it is working to deliver for NSW. These goals and priorities are multifaceted and complex but are what is required for the state to overcome its challenges by providing safe, reliable and effective transport solutions.

To deliver these goals, TfNSW needs to effectively leverage the vast potential of its data and insights by ensuring its people have the appropriate capability to make effective use of data in their roles.

National Health Data Hub
More information
Linked, multi-jurisdictional data to support policy development, service delivery and community benefits

Commonwealth and State and Territory government health agencies often operate in silos, collecting data that reflects a fragmented view of the community's health, and the delivery of services, limiting our understanding of the complex needs of populations and the interaction between services in delivering care to patients.

Data After Dark
More information
Addressing the longstanding information gap in measuring and monitoring the night-time economy

Data After Dark was created to address the longstanding information gap in measuring and monitoring the night-time economy. The challenge arose from a lack of affordable, reliable, accessible, and frequently updated data on night-time activities at local and state levels. Existing data sources are often fragmented and costly, creating significant barriers to obtaining comprehensive insights into after-dark activities. This information gap has historically hindered informed decision-making, leaving policy makers and stakeholders without a full understanding of the economic impact of night-time activities and a consistent measurement of changes over time.

Data Passport
More information
Making access to linked data easier, faster and safer through the Data Passport

Policy makers, data analysts and researchers in NSW face an onerous, inconsistent, and increasingly time-consuming process when requesting access to data. The main issues include:

  • Data custodians have different requirements for determining whether an analyst can access data, and these requirements are not always clear
  • As data custodians are siloed within different agencies, individuals must undergo multiple, repetitive checks every time they request access to an NSW government-held dataset
  • Data application and approval processes, including ‘Safe Researcher’ training and assessment are largely manual, done via email and lack transparency and consistency, creating further delays and errors.

Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data (SEED) Portal
More information
Driving Open Environmental Insights and Impact

The Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data (SEED) portal was established in 2016 to address the community need for access to environmental data supporting informed decision-making and to build public trust in government decisions. The initiative stemmed from two key independent reviews: The 2014 Independent Review of Coal Seam Gas Activities by the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, which recommended a Whole of Environment Data Repository and the 2014 NSW Biodiversity Legislative Review, which called for a whole-of-government biodiversity portal.

SEED exemplifies the NSW Government's Open Data Policy by serving as the primary public access point for government environmental data and integrating diverse non-governmental data. By being 'open by default’, adhering to international metadata standards, spatial data frameworks, and best-practice data governance principles to ensure data is reliable and fit for purpose.

Net Zero Accelerator
More information
Accelerating pathways to achieving net zero emissions in NSW

Reducing carbon emissions is essential to tackling climate change. To do this, we need to understand the carbon footprint of places, assets and activities in NSW. Strategic management of carbon emissions needs smart digital platforms to:

  • Enable emissions data gathering
  • Develop emissions inventories
  • Model emission reduction scenarios
  • Partner with technology providers and investors to deliver actions
  • Monitor and communicate place-based carbon abatement performance of government agencies.

SEED Portal Themed Hubs
More information
Establishing a low-cost themed hub service

Collaboration and informed decision making with environmental data has been hindered by limited access to reliable thematic data and a lack of dedicated spaces for meaningful interaction and discussion. Without a lightweight and adaptive solution, bespoke tools and websites were created to address customer need which were not interoperable and connected to established data systems, further exacerbating data fragmentation.

SEED Map
More information
Transforming Access to Environmental Spatial Data

The Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data (SEED) map is an interactive map of environmental data across NSW. The map is a core feature of the NSW Government's central resource for SEED, accounting for around a third of all site traffic. It is used to spatially interpret environmental data by the public, academics, industry and government. From environmental assessments to recreational interests.

Based on user feedback, the original SEED map was difficult to navigate, important tools were hidden, and it lacked interactivity. In keeping with program commitments to continuous improvement based on human centred design and innovation, a solution was needed to maintain the relevance and value of the map.
